As far as I can tell, it's mainly about the pilots and not so much the ships. I've seen S class ships with C class pilots and C class ships with S class pilots. The grade itself when you try to recruit someone is about the pilot and I doubt upgrading a ship to sell to a pilot that you then recruit would actually make much of a difference.Now, this might strike you as obvious, but the best way to start in No Man’s Sky is to keep the starting ship. It is free, barely damaged, and as a C-class fighter, it has the following boosts to its stats. Between 8%-15% damage boost. No Boost to shield. Between 5%-15% Agility.

Make sure you reload your save after 10-15 mins of not seeing it. Trading outposts are better than space stations. Fastest way I've found is to make a save at a trading post and reload it watch the ships that come in and once about 12 ships come in it starts to slow down a lot so just reload and repeat. Was able to find 3 s class in an hour ...But yeah just had a little read up and for example an S Class fighter can have a 50-55% damage bonus and 20-25% shield bonus. But an exotic gets like a 30-50% bonus on all 3 ship stats so pound for pound your getting way more upgrade in an exotic even if the bonuses can't be quite as high as the dominant bonuses on the other ship classes. ….

I have had the best luck finding the exotic (been playing since day 1) in poor star systems. There aren't any of the "normal starship" S-class calculations in the mix (non-exotic S-class starships can't appear in poor star systems) so it's just you, the poor aliens, and the one exotic style flying around.
